Almond milk is made of ground almonds

If you consume genetically modified foods are not a concern, look for a soy milk labeled non-GMO certification.

Almond milk has less protein than cow’s milk and soy milk, but has a nice flavor and creamy texture similar to cow’s milk they most enjoy.

Almond milk is about 1/3 of the calories in the form of 2% milk. Rice

Rice milk is the most hypoallergenic either alternative to milk and is often free of soy, gluten and nuts. It is made of boiled rice, rice syrup and brown rice starch. Rice milk is high in carbohydrates and low in protein compared to cow’s milk. Coconut

Coconut milk may be the closest milk texture of whole milk alternative. It is relatively high in fat with about 5 grams of saturated fat per serving. Coconut milk, along with most nut milks, works well in baked by their nuttiness products. Also often free of soy and gluten, coconut milk is often a good choice for those with multiple food allergies. However, coconut milk is not comparative nutritional profile to that of cow’s milk. One serving (one cup) of original coconut milk contains 80 calories, 1 g protein and 100 mg of calcium, while 1 cup milk 1% milk products has about 100 calories, 8 g protein and 300 mg of calcium.

Hemp

Hemp milk is another good alternative for people allergic to soy, nuts and gluten and is made of shelled hemp seeds, water and sweeteners. It contains a good amount of protein and fatty acids, but falls short in calcium.

Alternatives

Other alternatives to the new milk on the market include quinoa milk, oat milk and milk potato, milk 7-Grain (oats, rice, wheat, barley, triticale, buckwheat and millet) and sunflower milk.

If you choose to avoid milk products, make sure you are making the loss of nutrients with other whole foods or choosing a milk alternative that is closer in nutritional profile to that of cow’s milk. Beware of alternatives to flavored milk as they can be high in added sugars.

Cow’s milk lactose is available for people with lactose intolerance and organic cow’s milk for those concerned with hormones and antibiotics consumption. What I have found works best for me nutritional and flavor-wise is to change from a soy milk not simple GMO and cow’s milk without lactose, depending on what’s on sale this week. Sometimes I’ll buy almonds or coconut milk to smoothies or baked some good recipes, but not as often as they lack the protein.
